Cell phone ban could extend beyond Wausau

Leaders in the Wausau area tossed around ideas Thursday for a cell phone ban.

The proposal would ban drivers from using phones or other electronic devices behind the wheel. Hands-free phones or Bluetooth devices would be OK.

But the ban could go beyond Wausau if that city passes it. Leaders of surrounding communities met in Wausau Thursday afternoon to talk about working together, and to hammer out the wording.

"To make it clearer, better understood," said Wausau city council member Romey Wagner. "Consensus was that it was going to work for all of us and that it was important for us all to pass the same thing."

Wagner says Wausau's Public Health and Safety Committee will consider the ordinance, probably next month.
