Man to stand trial in UWSP student death

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) – A Portage County man accused of giving a deadly dose of heroin to a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student was ordered to stand trial Friday.

Erik Olsen, 26, of Hancock is charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the Nov. 17 death of Jordan Peterson, 22. Autopsy results showed Peterson died from a heroin overdose.

Portage County Circuit Judge Thomas Flugaur ruled prosecutors presented enough evidence in Friday's preliminary hearing to justify the charge. Olsen is to return to court Feb. 17 to enter a plea.

Police say Olsen gave drugs to Peterson, a biology major from Markesan, the day he was found dead in his off-campus home by a roommate. The criminal complaint said Peterson sent a text to Olsen, asking for $25 worth of some type of drug.

Olsen told investigators the student wanted to buy marijuana and Olsen denied selling marijuana to Peterson, the complaint said.

Olsen was not a UWSP student, police said.
