Wis. hospital to discontinue delivering babies

NEILLSVILLE (WAOW) – Citing challenges in recruiting doctors specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, Memorial Medical Center announced Friday that it will discontinue delivering babies Feb. 15.

Last year, 30 babies were born in the hospital, down form a peak of about 60 babies just four years ago, said Lisa Montgomery, a hospital spokeswoman.

We have fewer providers who deliver babies,” she said.

Expectant mothers served by the hospital likely now will go hospitals in Black River, Marshfield and Eau Claire to deliver babies before returning to doctors at Memorial Medical for postnatal care, Montgomery said.

Memorial Medical will continue to provide pediatric service and emergency obstetrics deliveries, Montgomery said.
