MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -
Police in Marshfield continue to search for a person who drove into a woman in a wheelchair, launching her 25 feet and sending her to the hospital. The hit and run crash happened Friday night near the intersection of North Peach Avenue and Waushara Drive.
"I saw the ambulance go by first and it's normal because the hospital is just right up the road, but once they slowed down, I knew it was somebody close," said Bruce Janssen, a neighbor.
Police say the victim was a 43-year-old woman in a motorized wheelchair.
They say the collision knocked her from her wheelchair, which launched her 25 feet.
She was treated at a hospital for broken ribs and a head injury.
Officers say she was traveling on the street in her motorized scooter because the sidewalks were covered in snow.
"Makes it difficult to maneuver in those types of situations, so she was on the roadway and doing so legally," said Lt. Darren Larson of the Marshfield Police Dept.
Now, officers say they're looking for answers. Witnesses told police that a woman in her 30's or 40's with dark blonde or light brown hair was driving an older white vehicle. They also say the car's license plate may start with "GE."
"We're busy on trying to find those leads right now," said Larson.
Police say the victim deserves to know who hit her.
"I think it only fitting that this lady who struck receives a little justice as well," said Larson. "She was traveling down the roadway and she was struck."
The Marshfield Police Department is offering a reward for any information that could help officers identify the driver.
The 43-year-old woman left St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield Monday afternoon in good condition.
