Loyal family loses home in fire that kills 5 pets

LOYAL (WAOW) – An early morning fire destroyed a home in rural Loyal, displacing a family of five and killing five pets, authorities said.

The fire that destroyed the Pat Weinfurter home on 26th Road broke out Tuesday about 6 a.m., authorities said.

We kind of walked way with empty pockets but with our lives. I feel pretty fortunate,” the father said Wednesday.

Weinfurter said his wife had gone to work and he was getting his daughters, ages 10, 12 and 14, ready for school when he smelled smoke and checked out an attached garage.

It was filled with smoke, he said.

He couldn't get back into the house through the garage and went through a patio door to the home to get his daughters out, he said.

We got out with about a minute to spare,” the 44-year-old father said. “The fire flashed through the house when we got out.”

Two family Bernese mountain dogs named Pella and Cruise and three cats died in the fire, Weinfurter said.

The loss included a pickup truck, a collector Pontiac Trans Am, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a camper, Weinfurter said.

The family has insurance, the father said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
