Seahawks GM carries a piece of Titletown to Super Bowl

De Pere (WAOW) -

The Green Bay Packers may not be headed to the Super Bowl, but a man who carries a little piece of Titletown with him has played a huge role in getting his team to the big game.

He's described as determined, hard working, a leader. When De Pere football coach Larry DecCeene first  met John Schneider he knew he was something special.

"He stood out to me right away," said DeCleene. "He always worked hard, he always listened and he always had fun."

Schneider, or more commonly known as the general manager for the Seattle Seahawks was born and raised in De Pere. Growing up, he played football, basketball, and ran track.

"He was just going to make himself succeed," said DeCleene.

Now, he's headed to the Super Bowl.

"You knew whatever he dedicated himself to, you knew he was going to be successful," explainedDeCleene.

Schneider began his career at home working for the Green Bay Packers.

"Anytime you see a coworker go on to do great things you definitely feel great," said Packers Spokesperson Aaron Popkey.

From there, Schneider went to the Kansas City Chiefs where he was the director of pro personnel. After that, he spent time in Washington and then eventually Seattle.

"When he got the job at Seattle I was like, wow, that's big time," remembered DeCleene.

But, for the former football coach, his memories of Schneider go way before "GM" was ever added to his title.

"In football, if we got the corner he was gone," remembered DeCleene. "So I always used to say to the guys, if we can just get the corner., John will be gone."

It's stories like those that make DeCleene smile as he recalls the last time he spoke to Schneider

"I said to him, am I really the reason you're so successful? I said it kiddingly. But, he said, actually you were very important in my life and I was like, oh wow, thank you."

Now, DeCleene hopes that success continues because he knows Schneider has it in him.

"He was going to get the best of whatever he had," said DeCleene.

Hopefully that means a Super Bowl victory.

"Ill be home rooting for (him), that's for sure," said DeCleene.
