PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The top-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team outscored UW-Platteville 45-28 in the second half to overcome a two-point halftime deficit and remain unbeaten with a 76-61 win at Bo Ryan Court on Wednesday night.
Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) went 12-for-16 from the free-throw line on his way to scoring a game-high 20 points for the Pointers (17-0, 8-0 WIAC). Tillema also added seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks in the game. Chas Cross recorded a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers (11-6, 6-2 WIAC).
UW-Stevens Point trailed 33-31 at halftime but shot 18-for-24 from the charity stripe in the second half to earn the road victory. The Pointers shot at least 50.0 percent in both halves and 52.1 percent for the game.
UWSP faced its largest deficit of the game with 15:31 remaining, trailing 43-37. However, the Pointers went on a 20-6 run over a span of over seven and a half minutes to take an eight-point lead, 57-49.
During the run, UW-Stevens Point scored on 10 consecutive possessions and held UW-Platteville to 3-for-9 from the field. Sean McGann (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo)scored all six of his points in the stretch, making three field goals in a row.
The Pioneers responded with a 7-2 run to get within three at 59-56 with 4:38 to play. The Pointers then scored the next 10 points of the game and made 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to pull away.
UW-Stevens Point outscored UW-Platteville 20-0 in points off turnovers and 13-5 in bench points in the second half. Alex Richard (Spring Green, WI/River Valley) came off the bench to score nine points in the game. The Pointers committed just seven turnovers in the game, compared to 13 by the Pioneers.
UWSP held the Pointers to 4-for-15 (26.7 percent) from behind the arc and 41.9 percent from the field in the game. Meanwhile, UW-Stevens Point was 5-for-11 (45.5 percent) from three-point range, including 4-for-8 in the first half.
UW-Stevens Point started the game quickly, taking a 16-9 lead in the opening seven minutes. UW-Platteville took its first lead of the game at the 4:13 mark of the first half and took a two-point lead into the break, 33-31. Jim Stocki scored all 10 of his points in the first half for the Pioneers.
Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) shot 6-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-7 from three-point range, and scored 18 points.Clayton Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln/UW-Green Bay) added 13 points, nine in the second half, and seven rebounds.
UW-Stevens Point plays at UW-La Crosse on Saturday at 3 p.m.
