Propane dealer calls shortage "a crisis"

A Schofield propane dealer calls the current propane shortage "a crisis."

Gary France is the president of France Propane Service and the chairman of the National Propane Association.

He says propane prices have doubled in the past week to $5 a gallon.

"We are meeting with Gov. Scott Walker on Monday to see if there is anything the state can do. We had a problem back in December with delivery of product to dealers and now it is a crisis because of the pricing issues that have been added into the mix," said France.

Industry analysts have outlined a number of reasons for the shortage.

They say there was an increased demand for propane to dry corn last fall which depleted supplies.

Bitter cold and extreme winter weather are blamed for slowing delivery to propane dealers.

Customers who use propane complain  the rising costs are out of hand and availability of the product uncertain.
