Special Olympics Winter Games canceled, athletes still dance

ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) - Special Olympics members are trading their athletic shoes for their dancing shoes, after organizers canceled the games due to the bitter cold.

Still, a dance was held Saturday for the athletes.

About 200 athletes and family members attended the dance.

Special Olympics members say they enjoyed the dance, but wish they'd been able to compete in the outdoor games.

"I think it's kind of disappointing that Mother Nature couldn't cooperate and give us the weather that we wanted, she had to go be so stingy again," said Adam Domino, a Special Olympics participant.

Those who attended also enjoyed a dinner.

Organizers say they're now focusing on upcoming events, including a basketball tournament in March.
