MADISON (WAOW) – A former Marathon County rural mail carrier was fined $125 and placed on one year of probation for stealing from the mail, a federal prosecutor said Thursday.
Lisa Virginia Barker, 48, of Gleason was convicted of felony theft by mail by a postal worker following customer complaints of missing mail in late 2010 and early 2011, U.S. Attorney John Vaudreuil said.
Barker was employed at a Schofield post office when a probe by the postal inspector general determined she stole a Target gift card from the mail, the prosecutor said in a statement.
“When confronted about the theft of the gift card from the test mail, Barker admitted that she had opened mail and taken items from the mail on approximately five or six occasions,” Vaudreuil said.
Barker worked at the post office until May 2011.
As part of her sentence, Barker was ordered to pay $80 in restitution, Vaudreuil said.
