Accused dog killer waives preliminary hearing

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - A Portage County man accused of killing his dog with a hammer returned to court Monday and waived his right to a preliminary hearing, according to online court records.

Cody Phillips, 26, of Bancroft was charged with felony mistreatment of an animal causing death in the death of his bluetick coonhound named Clyde. He was arrested Jan. 19.

Phillips told investigators that he was upset with the dog because it repeatedly urinated and defecated in the mobile home, authorities said.

Phillips told investigators he grabbed the dog by the collar, the dog growled and he hit it with a hammer, causing the dog to collapse, authorities said. Phillips told investigators he hit the dog two more times with the hammer to kill it.

Phillips is to return to court Feb. 10 to enter a plea to the charge.
