PLOVER (WAOW) -
The village of Plover has a special reason to be excited for this year's Olympic winter games. Its hometown superstar, Joe Pavelski, will compete for team USA hockey.
"Everywhere I go, if I go to the grocery store make sure you leave with extra time cause everyone wants to stop you and shake your hand and say good luck we're going to be watching and tell Joe good luck too," says Pavelski's mother.
She says the community of Plover has watched her son's success, from high school to the pros. She says the community has been very supportive .
Village leaders are pulling out all stops to show their support for Pavelski. Friday is designated as Joe Pavelski day in Plover. The village will unveil a new sign welcoming people to the home of Joe Pavelski. Village leaders say they're giving back because Pavelski has never forgotten where he came from.
"Clearly with hockey being his favorite he gives a lot back weather its the university or the local hockey programs here in the Stevens Point, Plover area which is pretty tremendous," says Village Administrator Dan Mahoney.
In 2010, team USA walked away with the silver. This year, the people of Plover hope Pavelski brings back the gold.
