Possible plea deal in retrial of Athens father

WAUSAU (WAOW) – An Athens man granted a new trial after being convicted of shaking his infant daughter to death in 2006 may have reached a plea agreement to avoid another trial, according to online court records.

Quentin Louis, 32, was convicted of first-degree reckless homicide and sentenced to 20 years in prison in the March 2005 death of his four-month-old daughter, according to court records. Prosecutors say Louis told investigators he became frustrated with the baby's crying and shook her.

Now-retired Marathon County Circuit Judge Vincent Howard ordered a new trial in 2009 following a state Supreme Court ruling involving disagreements by medical experts about injuries associated with shaken-baby syndrome.

A state appeals court upheld Howard's decision to grant a new trial.

Louis has been in jail or prison since his March 2005 arrest.

Louis is to return to court Feb. 25 for a plea and sentencing hearing, according to online court records.

Louis' attorney, Edward Hunt of Milwaukee, declined comment on the case Wednesday.

Marathon County Assistant District Attorney Lance Leonard did not return telephone messages.
