Utility, fire experts advise removing snow and ice

The snow and ice this winter have fire and utility crews reminding you to keep home vents and fire hydrants near your property clear.

"We don't have time to stop and search for a hydrant that is buried by snow. Every second counts," said Lt. Jeremy Kopp of the Wausau Fire Department.

"This year we are seeing more reports of people who have carbon monoxide detectors going off. Some of those are because of vent intake or exhaust pipes being blocked by snow," said Matt Murphy of Wisconsin Public Service.

The utility says gently clearing the snow and ice will allow the appliance's vent on the regulating device to breathe.
Also clearing snow and ice from the natural gas meter on your home will allow access to the shut off line that the utility or fire department would need if there was an emergency, the utility said.

If you have questions about clearing snow you should contact your local utility or fire department.
