Spanish court orders architect to pay compensation

Posted:
MADRID (AP) - A court has ordered a renowned Spanish architect to pay millions of dollars in compensation to a property development company for what it calls shortcomings in his work.

The provincial court of northwestern Oviedo says in a statement that architect Santiago Calatrava must pay 2.9 million euros ($4 million) to Jovellanos XXI in a dispute over work on Oviedo's city hall, which has an elaborate design featuring external flying buttress-like decorations.

The court's finding Friday -- which can be appealed -- upholds a lesser court's earlier decision, but reduced the compensation slightly from 3.3 million euros ($4.5 million).

Calatrava is also being sued by the regional government of his native Valencia over an opera house that cost more than 332 million euros ($455.6 million), four times its original budget.
