Merrill ice drags season ends

MERRILL (WAOW) - Merrill ice draggers are wrapping up their season. Saturday was the championship race day on Lake Alexander in Merrill.

About 30 drivers put the pedal to the metal -- some reaching speeds of nearly 130 miles per hour.

This marked the 50th year of the event. Organizers say they were thankful for the good weather. Races were canceled earlier in the season due to the bitter cold.

"It is exciting to watch to see what we do," said Bill Bunnell, the Merrill Ice Draggers president. "We come out here and put our town out if you will and put the cars on the track."
