Mizzou defensive linebacker: "I'm gay"

College football star Michael Sam has announced he's gay.

Sam is an All-American defensive linebacker for the Missouri Tigers and expected to enter the NFL draft in May.  Once selected to a team, he'd be the first openly gay player in the league.

Sam talked about his sexuality with ESPN's Outside the Lines, saying "I came to tell the world that I'm an openly, proud gay man."  When asked by a reporter how it felt to say that, Sam said, "It's a load off my chest."

Many former and current players have expressed support for Sam.  But some NFL insiders say the move could be bad for his career, because the league isn't ready for an openly gay player.

League officials released a statement saying they will welcome and support Sam.
