UPDATE: Portage County man reaches deal in fraud case

PORTAGE COUNTY (WAOW) -- The Portage County man accused in a social security check scheme pleaded no contest to one felony count of theft/false representation during a plea hearing Monday, according to online court documents.

Two other felonies, including forgery, were dismissed as part of the agreement. Those felonies can be considered during sentencing. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for April 15.

Police say Ronald Disher, 72, cashed in his mother-in-law's social security checks for more than 30 years.

Disher was set to be re-tried in April on the charges after a jury failed to reach a verdict in January, but an agreement was reached instead.

Marie Jost was last seen in the 1980s and prosecutors say some $170,000 worth of her Social Security checks were fraudulently cashed.

Disher's wife, Delores, and brother-in-law, Charles Jost, were also charged with stealing the Social Security money. Jost was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and was sentenced to a mental institution. Charges against Delores Disher were dismissed after she suffered a stroke in jail.
