Man pleads not guilty in hammer killing of dog

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - A Portage County man accused of killing his dog with a hammer pleaded not guilty Monday.

Cody Phillips, 26, is charged with felony mistreatment of an animal causing death. No trial date was immediately set in Portage County Circuit Court, online court records said.

Phillips was arrested Jan. 19 in the killing of his bluetick coonhound named Clyde.

Phillips told investigators that he was upset with the dog because it repeatedly urinated and defecated in the mobile home, according to a criminal complaint.

Phillips told investigators he grabbed the dog by the collar, the dog growled and he hit it with a hammer, causing the dog to collapse, the complaint said. He then hit it twice more to kill it.

According to prosecutors, Phillips was angry that his wife filed for divorce and moved out with their children and he attributed a big part of the problem to Clyde.
