UPDATE: Suspicious Oneida Co. bag full of diapers

Posted: Updated:
RHINELANDER (WAOW) - The Oneida County Courthouse was evacuated Monday afternoon after a black duffel bag was found unattended, the sheriff said.

Turns out, the bag sitting in the Department of Social Services waiting room contained diapers, Sheriff's Lt. Lloyd Gauthier told Newsline 9 late Monday evening.

"The bag was then x-rayed and it was determined that the content were to be diapers," said Gauthier.

Sheriff Grady Hartman said the bag was found at 10 a.m. on a chair by the wall and the courthouse was evacuated about 2 p.m. “for the safety of those working and visiting the courthouse.”

Why did it take four hours for the evacuation to occur? Gauthier said the sheriff's department wasn't called until that time. He said officers in the courthouse spent that time trying to find the owner of the bag, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

"We were not made aware of this until after two o'clock," said Gauthier. "The time between that the Department of Social Services was in the process of locating the owner."

The courthouse will reopen Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. The owner of the bag is still unknown.
