7 hurt in crashes on icy Vilas County roads

EAGLE RIVER (WAOW) – Two crashes within minutes of each other on icy roads Friday morning injured seven people in Vilas County, the sheriff's department said.

At 9:40 a.m., three people were hurt and transported to a hospital after a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer and a 2011 Ford Escape collided on state Highway 70 west of Eagle River, Capt. Russell Kennedy said.

About 35 minutes later, four people were hurt, one critically, in head-on crash of a 2007 Honda and a 1992 Plymouth Voyager on US Highway 51 in Arbor Vitae, Kennedy said. The critically injured person was later flown by helicopter to a larger hospital for treatment, he said.

It was pretty icy this morning,” Kennedy said.

The sheriff's department investigated at least four crashes Friday morning attributed to hazardous roads, Kennedy said.
