Farmers stay busy with Winter Farmers Market in Wausau

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The rough winter has many farmers anxious for spring, but they aren't letting the cold stop them from doing what they love.

Every Saturday this winter, Tony Schultz can be found at the Winter Farmers Market in Wausau selling produce.

He says the bitter cold hasn't held him or others back.

"The farmers market doesn't start in December," said Schultz. "It starts in March or April or May when you're planting."

He says most of these crops didn't even see the cold winter as farmers harvested much of the produce in the fall.

"It didn't really freeze until right before Thanksgiving," said Schultz. "It gave us more time to bring in storage crops. We've also got people bringing things they can produce year round."

Event leaders says these items have people coming back for more, with often hundreds turning out to buy the fresh produce.

"The vendors are pleased with the amount of people that come every week and by from them and I'd say the customers are happy with the amount of vendors here in return," said Amanda Ostrowski of the Marathon County Health Dept.

Still, farmers say they are looking ahead to spring.

"With a harsher winter, I expect a later spring, but that could be totally variable," said Schultz.

He may not be sure what to expect, but he says he can't wait for spring.

The Winter Farmers Market is held every Saturday at the UW Extension building in Wausau. The market ends in April.
