Merrill had four first place winners and ran away with the team competition at the WIAA Division 1 Wrestling regional in Stevens Point Saturday.
One of Merrill's four individual winners was Tyler Schmidt, who is currently ranked first in the state in the 220 weight class. Schmidt defeated Drew Stotmeister of D.C. Everest 27-16 in the final round to earn the regional victory.
Merrill secured the team win with 233 points. SPASH came in second place with 177 points, and D.C. Everest finished in third place, totaling 164.
In Division 2, Stanley-Boyd,/Owen-Withee/Thorp edged Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal 211 to 204.5 in Neillsville. The two teams combined to produce eight of the 14 individual champions.
At the Division III level, Stratford ran away with the team victory, scoring 284 points. Edgar came in second place with 132, and Athens placed third with 127 points.
Stratford's Anthony Glinecki, who came in ranked second in the state in the 113 weight class, went on to win his class. Glinecki was one of eight Stratford players to win an individual title.
Team sectionals are scheduled for Tuesday, February 18.
