Fishermen get ready for spring at sports show

ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) - A long, harsh winter has many fishermen itching for spring. Thousands flocked to the Central Wisconsin Sports Show in Rothschild over the weekend.

Show organizers say about 6,000 people anxious for warmer weather attended the event over the weekend.

"I think people are just darn tired of this winter and we've got the stuff to get them ahead here," said Chuck Collins, the show producer.

People shopped for new fishing lures, rods and more.

Vendors say people were excited to look at the new equipment.

"Sometimes spending a little money on new fishing baits can get somebody through a couple more weeks of winter," said Justin Steinke, the store manager at Shay Creek Sports.

He thinks fishermen are looking forward to putting the bitter cold winter behind them.

"Fishermen are having a hard time getting to certain places due to horrible traveling conditions on the ice," said Steinke.

He's hopeful for strong spring season.

"I think the [fish are] doing well beneath the ice," said Steinke. "With all the snow we got this winter, we should have good flow in the rivers around here."

The extra water is getting some excited.

"More water, more habitat for the fish to live in, so hopefully they'll be hungry," said Andrew Dillenburg of Marshfield.
