Roof collapse, gas leak at vacant Merrill building

MERRILL (WAOW) -- Snow is believed to have caused the roof of a vacant building to collapse and sever a gas line in Merrill, according to Fire Chief Dave Savone.

Officials say the collapse happened this morning and pieces of the roof fell on the gas line. They say electric and gas to the building has been shut off, as the building airs out.

Savone says no one in the area is being evacuated. He says the collapse happened at the old Hurd Windows and Doors building on Prospect Street in Merrill. Officials say neighbors reported the incident.

Authorities say the building is currently vacant but was recently sold.

The Merrill Fire Department says the levels are safe and officials say they will continue to monitor the levels throughout the day.
