Melting snow raises concerns about ice dams

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Rising temperatures and melting snow are raising concerns about ice dams on homes and businesses.

Ice dams are blocks of ice that form along the edge of your roof that prevent melting snow from draining.

Instead, water backs up, leaking inside a home or business.

"We have had an epic winter with a lot of snow. As it warms up a lot of the snow starts to melt and it can't get through so it backs up and runs through the shingles it can cause a lot of damage," said Kevin Noel of Home Insulation in Wausau.

Noel says a snow rake to remove snow buildup from your roof is the best prevention.

If you have ice buildup on your home or business, he suggests hiring an independent inspector to check the insulation and ventilation in the building.
