Athlete of the Week: Travis Hettinga, Wausau West

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Wrestling is the only sport that Wausau West senior Travis Hettinga competes in, and he does it well.

It's more than just a sport to me,” Hettinga says with a smile. “It's kind of a lifestyle.”

Last year, Hettinga helped lead the Warriors to a team state championship. Hettinga's head coach, Troy Fabry, has known him since he was nine years old, and coached him to a youth state individual championship. Fabry credits the senior's work ethic.

He's always been a hard worker,” Fabry explained. “He's a guy who puts in time in the offseason. He's always looking for extra help and is coachable.”

Despite those qualities, Hettinga is still on a quest for his first WIAA individual state title. He finished his fourth place his sophomore year and in third place last season. Now with one last chance, Hettinga says he is more focused than ever.

The people that hold back now are the ones that end up losing to somewhere they're not supposed to lose to,” he said. “I'm just trying to wrestle as hard as I can the next two weeks.”

And it may make Hettinga's journey easier, knowing that one of his biggest fans, his coach, is right on the sideline.

You always want it for your guys that put the time in and put the work in,” Fabry said. “And for Travie, it would be extra special to see him up on that wall of fame in the number one spot.”

Hettinga said last year's team championship was his best accomplishment on the mat so far, but he had a hard time downplaying what an individual crown would mean to him.

I've wanted to be a state champ ever since I was a little guy,” Hettinga said, grinning. “Hopefully I can get it done.”
