UN official: C. African Republic needs more troops

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) - The humanitarian chief for the United Nations says more troops are needed on the ground in Central African Republic.

At the end of a three-day visit, Valerie Amos said Thursday that "we know there are not enough troops on the ground."

France has sent 1,600 soldiers and promised 400 more. There are also nearly 6,000 African peacekeepers trying to stabilize the country that erupted into sectarian bloodshed in early December.

Many, though, are calling for that African Union-led force to be transformed into a United Nations peacekeeping mission.

Critics also say the existing African force has failed to secure many areas outside the capital in this nation of 4.6 million people.

Other U.N. officials have warned that "ethnic-religious cleansing" is taking place as tens of thousands of Muslims flee.
