Owen man killed in crash with semi-truck

NEILLSVILLE (WAOW) – A 56-year-old Owen man was killed Friday when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a semi-truck at an intersection on state Highway 29, the Clark County Sheriff's Department said.

The crash that killed Dennis Dumke happened about 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of County Highway O near Withee as strong winds whipped around newly fallen snow, the agency said.

Dumke failed to yield to the semi-truck driven by a 42-year-old Wausau man, Capt. James Hirsch said in a statement.

The semi swerved to avoid the pickup truck but was hit on the driver's side, Hirsch said.

Dumke was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from his vehicle, Hirsch said.

Hirsch said the Withee area received about 5 inches of snow from the storm that blew through Thursday and Friday.

Roads were slippery Friday morning, it was windy but there were not white-out conditions, he said.

The semi driver told investigators that he saw the pickup coming and almost went into the ditch trying to avoid the crash, Hirsch said.

I think it was more driver error than weather factors,” Hirsch said.
