WAUSAU (WAOW) -
Snowshoe racers braved the wind and the cold at Nine Mile County Forest Sunday.
Organizers of the Stomp the Swamp event said there were over 100 participants across the different classes. There were 6K's and 12K's for the standard snowshoes plus other races for the mountaineer division.
Organizers said competing with the mountaineers is a challenge for only the toughest snowshoers.
"The mountaineer division is wearing the large snowshoes, the 4 feet long wooden snowshoes, and carrying a 15 pound backpack," said Jay Punke, the race director.
This is the eighth year of Stomp the Swamp.
Organizers say the cold and snow this winter has been great for snowshoeing.
