Consulting firm advises plan for Thomas Street

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Potential plans are now in sight for the redevelopment of Thomas Street in Wausau.

A consulting firm, GRAEF, presented its research to the Committee of the Whole Monday night.

Under the plan, the road would have two lanes in both directions from 1st Avenue to the river. West of 1st Avenue, the street would have just one lane for both ways along with turn lanes and medians. Consultants say this option would be best for traffic and urban development.

"It's a matter of you know letting the dust settle, having the debate and moving it forward to the various committees," said Mayor Jim Tipple.

Residents of the Thomas Street neighborhood attended the meeting. They had the opportunity to share their opinion on the redevelopment plan with the committee and ask the consulting firm questions.

"I believe this is somewhat of a classist plan because the household income tends to be lower in this neighborhood," said Tom Killian, a 1st Avenue resident.

Council members discussed the recommendations, but made no decisions.

Tipple says he hopes the council will settle on an idea by the summer.
