Dozens killed in attack on Nigerian school

DAMATURU, Nigeria (AP) - At least 58 students are dead after an attack by Islamic militants on a dormitory at a school in northern Nigeria.

The militants set fire to the building, then shot and slit the throats of students who tried to escape through windows during the pre-dawn attack.

One teacher says the attackers "slaughtered them like sheep" with machetes, and gunned down those who ran away.

Female students were spared in the attack, according to the spokesman for the governor of the region. In the past, militants from the Boko Haram (BOH'-koh hah-RAHM') movement have abducted women -- but this time, the insurgents went to the female dormitories and told the young women to go home, get married, and abandon their western education.

A battle by the militants for an Islamic state has left thousands of people dead, and made the group the biggest threat to security in Nigeria, which is Africa's top oil producer. Attacks have increasingly targeted civilians -- both Muslim and Christian.

Local officials buried the bodies of 29 victims, while another 29 of the dead were taken to a hospital mortuary. Eleven wounded survivors are being treated at the hospital.
