Area wrestlers advance to WIAA state title bouts


The WIAA individual state wrestling competition continued on Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison. The area has 12 wrestlers who have made it to championship matches in their respective weight classes. The state title bouts will take place Saturday evening.

In Division 1, Merrill has three wrestlers that could bring home state titles. Tyler Schmidt will look to defend his 220 pound title, while Ben Hintze will wrestle for 1st place at 182 pounds. In their fifth meeting of the season, Merrill's Mason Reinhardt and Wausau West's Travis Hettinga will battle for a state championship at 160 pounds. Also in Division 1, Joe Ziolkowski from D.C. Everest looks to win a state title at 145 pounds and Wisconsin Rapids will have Patrick Spray wrestling in the 113 pound final.

In Division 2, Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Braxton Potrykus and Wautoma/Wild Rose's Bryce Bennot will wrestle for a 152 pound state title.

Division 3 has wrestlers from Stratford and Bonduel who can still win a state championship on Saturday. Stratford will have Alex Heiden wrestling for 1st place in the 126 pound bracket and Dondrick Tackes battling for a state title at 195 pounds. Bonduel sophomore Garrett Siolka will compete for a 113 pound championship while Jacob Wudtke will look to win state at 170 pounds.

Newsline 9 will be in Madison at the state championship matches and will provide coverage Saturday on Newsline 9 at 10:00 p.m.
