Winter tourism boost in Northwoods

All the snow this winter is boosting tourism in the Northwoods.

Buck Drosshart, the general manager of the Pointe Hotel and Suites, says the hotel has been at least 90 percent full nearly every weekend this winter.

"This year more than ever we've been experiencing them coming at 10 and 11 o'clock in the morning to get another day of snowmobiling," said Drossart.

He says the good snow conditions attracted snowmobilers for miles. Their trailers line the hotel's parking lot.

"It's pretty cool. It's almost like you need to put in a parking lot just for the snowmobiles," said Drossart. "When you drive and see 65 to 80 snowmobiles parked in that area, you wonder how they got in there."

Some of the money coming into the hotels in the area is going back to the community through the room tax commission. Last quarter, it brought in nearly $36,000.

That's more than $4,500 than the year before.

"They're busy as they are in the summertime, so it's going to be great to see how this money gets turned over in the community several times," said Woody Woodruff, the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce treasurer.

Chamber members say the commission will mostly fund tourism advertising for the area.

"We're just kind of hoping that winter stays as good as possible for as long as possible and then a quick transition into spring," said Woodruff.

But for now, snowmobilers can get their fill.
