Tribe, Vilas County DA form partnership

LAC DU FLAMBEAU (WAOW) - The Lac du Flambeau band of Lake Superior Chippewa is helping pay for a job in the Vilas County District Attorney's office that is designed to speed up the prosecution of criminal cases.

The three-year agreement calls for the tribe to pay $75,000, which will be matched by Vilas County, for a part-time administrative secretary to help the district attorney deal with a growing backlog of cases, officials said.

Tribal President Tom Maulson and District Attorney Al Moustakis held a ceremony Tuesday for the tribe to pay its first $25,000 installment.

The tribe has its own court system and hears civil cases but federal law requires the county to handle most criminal cases.
