Greenhouse owners deal with growing season challenges
MARATHON CO. (WAOW) -
MARATHON (WAOW) -- At Garden Path Greenhouse in the Town of Marathon planting is underway beneath snow covered greenhouses.
Owner Mary Ruplinger says it's been one of the toughest winters she can remember.
"I don't ever remember it being this cold and snowy. We lost one of our small greenhouses due to the snow and wind. We are waiting for the parts to repair it so we can use it later in the growing season," said Ruplinger.
She has cleared snow from the tops of the other greenhouses and has her fingers crossed that we won't get any heavy wet snows.
If the roof falls in on a greenhouse where she has flowers growing it could kill the plants and cost her thousands of dollars in lost sales.
Because of the cold Ruplinger has turned on the furnaces to keep those plants warm.
Fortunately for her, she locked in the price she pays for propane so the recent price spike didn't affect her.
She hopes to have the greenhouses open for early planting season by the end of April.
