There will be no area boys basketball teams competing at the WIAA State Tournament in Madison. Marshfield, Rhinelander, defending Division 4 state champion Auburndale and Newman Catholic all lost today in their respective sectional finals.
Marshfield faced off against the number four team in the state, Neenah, and was defeated 54 to 31, despite getting out to a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game.
Rhinelander trailed by just three at the half in their Division 2 semifinal, but Rice Lake was too much down the stretch, winning 72-49 behind the play of their big man Henry Ellenson.
Auburndale failed to convert from the field in the final minutes of the game, and went on to lose to Brillion 47-42 in Division 4.
NEW Lutheran came out blazing against Newman Catholic, and the Blazers outlasted the Cardinals 58-54 in Division 5.
Girls basketball regional finals are Saturday night.
