International Women's Day

Posted:
RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) - Tensions are high between Ukraine and Russia, as Russia maintains a presence in Ukraine's Crimea region.

But here in central Wisconsin, Ukrainians and Russians are celebrating a holiday together.

About 25 Russian-speaking people attended a dinner for International Women's Day.

The holiday is much like Mother's Day and is celebrated in Europe and Russia. Those attending say it was fun to celebrate the holiday, despite the conflict in their home countries.

"Tradition is pretty much the same we get together and share stories, share everything," Lioudmila Deffner, who has Russian heritage.

"It feels actually really good, despite some politics some political conflicts in our country, people still get together," Olena Centeno, who has Ukrainian heritage.

People brought a variety of dishes, including sweets like baklava.
