Jazzfest shows off high school talent

MERRILL (WAOW) - A central Wisconsin audience was treated to jazz music Saturday afternoon.

High school bands performed at the Wausau Area Jazz Festival.

This is the 8th year the event has showcased young musical talent. Organizers say 110 students performed.

The bands were from Merrill, Wausau East, Wausau Newman and DC Everest High Schools.

Teachers say jazz has given the students a new outlet to express their musical creativity.

"Usually they don't know much about it coming in and usually the more they know about it, the more excited about it they get. That's exactly our job: try to get them more familiar with it so they can develop an appreciation for it," said Kevin Short, the Merrill High band director.

Guest artists also performed with the students. They had conducted workshops earlier in the morning.
