The WIAA team state wrestling tournament this weekend featured two area teams, however, neither Merrill or Wittenberg-Birnamwood advanced to the state championship dual in their respective divisions.
In Division 1, Merrill took down Mukwonago 49-24 to in the quarterfinal round to move on to Friday evening's semifinals. Unfortunately, the Bluejays fell to Bay Port 28-25 in the semifinal round. Merrill was unable to overcome a stretch of six straight lost matches, despite registering wins in five of the final six weight classes. The Bluejays' season ended with a 19-2 record after getting back to the team state tournament for the first time since 2006.
In Saturday's Division 2 semifinals, Wittenberg-Birnamwood made it's first team state appearance bringing along state champion Braxton Potrykus and five other individual state qualifiers. The Chargers could not take advantage of several chances to earn bonus points, failing to tally any technical falls or pins in the dual. Pewaukee beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 28-19 to end the Chargers season one dual shy of wrestling for a state championship. Troy Ostrowski's squad ended the year with a 17-2 record.
