Soldiers clear barricades in western Venezuela

Venezuela's government has deployed hundreds soldiers in the western city of San Cristobal after student leader was shot and killed and two other youths wounded by gunfire.

The troops used armored personnel carriers and heavy equipment Tuesday to clear dozens of barricades that had been up since anti-government protests began last month.

Mayor Daniel Ceballos said by phone that soldiers were also blocking entrances to the city.

He said 24-year-old student leader Daniel Tinoco was manning a barricade when unidentified gunmen shot him in the chest on Monday night. Ceballos said the two wounded students were with Tinoco.

Ceballos said there are indications armed pro-government groups known as "colectivos" were the gunmen. He and opposition leaders have demanded the government disarm the colectivos.

Prosecutors said they would investigate Tinoco's death.
