NEILLSVILLE (AP) -
After averaging seven points per game for Neillsville's girls basketball team last season, Katelyn Crothers has upped her average to 12 this year.
The pain of last year's state semifinal loss is what drives her.
“I think last year our trip to state—and we lost obviously—so the motivation to get back to state really encouraged me to get in the gym throughout the summer and work on my game,” Crothers said.
An injury to star forward Jenny Linder may also have come as a blessing in disguise for the Warriors.
“Jenny hurt her ankle at the end of softball season and was laid up for a while,” Neillsville Head Coach John Gaier said. “That really forced some of our other kids to take on different roles than they had earlier in their career.”
Crothers said throughout the summer and the season she has taken on a greater role for the Warriors.
“It actually has helped me step up into a leadership role,” she said. “It's helped me gain confidence. And we can rely on other people other than (Linder).”
Gaier said this senior class is used to winning. As another potential state tournament championship looms, Crothers would like to go out in style.
“I want it more than anything,” she said with a smile. “Especially being my senior year. This is how I'd like to finish out. Hopefully we can get back to state.”
