Thorp cheers on high school team

THORP (WAOW) - Size isn't keeping one central Wisconsin town from letting its school spirit shine.

The Thorp High School boys basketball team will be playing for a state title for the first time in 32 years.

In a town where everyone knows everyone, seeing that success means a little bit more.

"We're really excited to see them because we see them everyday and it just brings excitement to you," said Pat Anderson, the manager of Express Mart.

Cardinal red decorates store fronts and window signs.

But on gameday, Thorp is a ghost town with nearly everyone traveling to Madison for the tournament.

"This morning we were very busy of course seeing people going to the game," said Anderson. "This afternoon it's been very, very quiet."

Thorp High School's student body is about 200 students, but only about 50 attended classes on Thursday.

"We sent two full fan buses down and so we tried to get everyone on that wanted to go, but we definitely let the fans and the teachers go," said James Montgomery, the Thorp District Administrator.

The high school closed early on Thursday. School leaders say being at the state tournament is a memory to cherish.

"We're very fortunate to be there and not everyone gets to experience that in their four years in high school," said Montgomery.

Those who couldn't make the journey gathered to watch the game together.

The Thorp Cardinals take on the Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran Blazers at 11:05 am on Saturday.
