Old Wausau landfill gets final clearance for sports complex

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Soccer fans in Wausau will soon have a new place to enjoy the game. The old Holtz-Krause landfill now has final clearance to become a sports complex.

The Department of Natural Resources tested the sight and officials say it is now contamination free. The complex is set to include 15 fields, three parking lots, and a concession stand.

"It's just an excellent example of taking an area of the city that was a landfill with basically nothing or no uses for it and turning it into really a destination place," said Kevin Fable, an environmental engineer.

The complex is set to be finished by the spring of 2015.
