Marshfield chapel needs $40,000 in repairs

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) - In the middle of Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield, an empty chapel stands with its future unknown.

"It looks like the building will be taken down in somewhere in 2015," says Mike Baltus, cemetery coordinator.

The Vaughn-Hansen Interdenominational Chapel is about 30 years old. For the past three years, cemetery organizers say the building has not been used.

"The chapel being closed up all the time, it developed a mold problem. We've tried opening doors and running fans in here and try to air it out as much as possible but it got to the point where we wanted to address the issue," Baltus said.

Now, Baltus says it would cost $40,000 to revive the chapel. With water, heating and electricity still running through the building, leaders say it costs the city $4,000 a year to operate. Baltus says the building has been decommissioned and demolition is very likely.

"Does the city go ahead and commit funds to bringing the building back up or do we look at other issues? How often does the building use? In this case unfortunately, it had not been used. So the decision was easy," says Baltus.

Baltus said he has been trying reach out to the Vaughn-Hansen family but has yet to hear from them.

City leaders say they would consider keeping the chapel open if the $40,000 needed could be raised through fundraising.
