Weston joins other communities ignoring cell phone ban

WESTON (WAOW) -- The Village of Weston has opted against pursuing a cell phone ban—at least for now.

This is the latest community in the Wausau area to back away from telling drivers to put down the phones.

Village administrator Daniel Guild told Newsline 9 Weston has other important issues it wants to tackle first. He said the village may take up a ban later in the year.

As Newsline 9 reported Thursday, Kronenwetter, Rib Mountain, and Schofield have also decided against passing a ban. Schofield Mayor Ken Fabel told Newsline 9 council members were reluctant to pass a ban since other surrounding municipalities weren't doing the same thing.

When Wausau city council members originally considered the ban, they met with leaders from surrounding communities to discuss working together. At a meeting in January, many leaders said it made the most sense to have a regional cell phone ban.

But as of now, Wausau is the only municipality to ban drivers from using cell phones.
