March Madness hits Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point is buzzing with March Madness basketball fever. The university is hosting the mens' Division III sectionals round on Friday and Saturday.

Eric Truyman, a UWSP senior, knew he had to get tickets to Friday's game.

"We've been going to games ever since we were freshmen," said Truyman.

He wasn't about to miss the Pointers take on the Emory Eagles in a Sweet Sixteen matchup.

"Even though you expect them to win every year, it seems they're always good games," said Truyman.

The Pointers are one of four teams playing in the Division III sectionals hosted by UW-Stevens Point.

"It's exciting and it's something special for Stevens Point to have," said student Melanie DeMask.

Athletic Director Daron Montgomery says the school is proud to be in the NCAA spotlight, as a sectionals host and top contender.

"We really just want to roll out the red carpet and make them feel welcome and get that championship experience," said Montgomery.

University bookstore leaders say the games have brought increased foot traffic and sales to their store. They say students are trying to stock up on their Pointers gear for the postseason.

"It's awesome to feel the unity of the community and the campus and to pull us all together," said Erin Raikowski, merchandise buyer for the bookstore.

But those with tickets in hand say the game is the real magic because no one knows how long a postseason run will last.

"One win and you're out," said Truyman.

The winners of Friday's games will advance to the Elite Eight. Those winners will play Saturday for a trip to the Final Four in Virginia.
