Polka Jam keeps spirit of polka alive

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) - For the 22nd year in a row, polka music fans from across the state gathered in Marshfield to celebrate the music they love.

Organizers say they expected more than 150 people to show up on Sunday, including several musicians.

It was an open mic format with each performer getting 15-20 minutes to play.

For some, the love affair with polka goes back a long way.

"I grew up with polka music. I was the youngest of all the cousins and we went to wedding dances, anniversaries. Everybody had a polka band and we just don't have that live music anymore. This is a way to keep that live music going," said Sara Kennow of Marshfield.

The event lasted for several hours. Organizers say they will do a Polka Jam in the spring as well.
