Wisconsin Rapids water main break fixed

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - One of the busiest streets in Wisconsin Rapids turned into a swimming pool Sunday.

"Basically two lines pumping water out so it looked pretty bad,” says Dale Scheunemann, Water Superintendent for Wisconsin Rapids.

It happened at the corner of 8th Street and Pepper Avenue, closing part of the area for an entire day.

"All the barricades and traffic devices have been removed and the lights have been put back to the normal operating procedures," says Street Supervisor Paul Vollert.

Scheunemann says water lines often break when temperatures warm up.This happens because frost in the ground starts to move. So far this winter, workers have repaired 25 water main breaks in Wisconsin Rapids. Last year, they fixed about 20. Scheunemann says the worst year for water main breaks came in 1995, when the city fixed 33 of them.

"As the temperature warms up and things change, if it's a gradual change it should be minimal but that's hard to tell what's to happen. If its a quick change of temperature, you see more of them," said Scheunemann.

Public works crews say water going to several properties was shut down for a few hours while they repaired the break.
