Wausau choir director to retire

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The choir director at the center of the Christmas music controversy directed his final spring concert Monday night.

Phillip Buch is retiring after almost four decades at Wausau West High School.

Monday was the final spring concert of Buch's career. More than 500 people attended.

"It was just a fantastic night. It's been 37 years in the classroom, and each year music moves young men and women. There's just a real passion in their hearts, and it's just the best job in the Wausau School District," Buch said.

You may remember Buch as the person who was at odds with the school board over a move to limit religious songs at last year's holiday concert. He temporarily disbanded the Master Singers as a result.

The issue is still under discussion, but the group did get back together.

Newsline 9 asked Buch if that ordeal led to his decision to resign.

"Absolutely not, and that's all I'm going to say about that issue right now," said Buch. "I want to enjoy the moment with what we have, with where we're at right now."

Buch has taught at the high school for 37 years.
